Vladimir Dikarev & Natasha Dikareva at

     ArTrujillo Gallery

On Saturday March 19th ArTrujillo Gallery proudly presents its newest exhibit, “Inside Eternity” featuring paintings, drawings, installation and sculpture by the well-known Twin Cities-based Ukrainian artists Vladimir Dikarev and Natasha Dikareva.

This father and daughter artistic team, Vladimir the painter and Natasha the sculptor, have a refreshingly lyrical approach to their art.  Each displays a virtuosity of beautiful line, color and rhythm in describing the human figure.  Even more enticing, however, is their shared vision of connecting ourselves to our deeper origins.  Their images are archetypal, evoking a timelessness and grace intended to remind us of our eternal qualities – the inherent need to explore the nature of our being, for example -- beyond the noise, rush and violence of modern life.

Both artists received advanced fine arts training in Ukraine and Russia, and have exhibited internationally in Europe as well as throughout the USA.  They have established themselves in Minnesota since the mid-1990’s.

Interestingly, the new location of ArTrujillo Gallery at 349 13th Ave NE places it directly within the sphere of an historic Minneapolis Ukrainian immigrant community.  With this prestigious exhibit, ArTrujillo Gallery continues its tradition of bringing to the public a broader view of the Twin Cities’ contemporary cultural connections.

The public is invited to attend the opening of “Inside Eternity” on Saturday, March 19th from 5pm to 11 PM at ArTrujillo Gallery, to meet the artists and share an evening of refreshments, music, and fine art.  The exhibit remains on display through April 17, 2005.  Gallery hours are Noon – 10:00 PM Tues-Sat, Sun 10:00AM – 5:00 PM.  For more information, artrujillo@hotmail.com, www.dikarevart.com , or call 612-821-9076.

My Graphic Heart – editions and drawings by Jim Grafsgaard

New art done the old way - honestly, by hand and by heart – is what Jim Grafsgaard offers us in his show opening Friday March 21st at the Artrujillo (art-true-HEE-yo) Multicultural Gallery in Minneapolis. Titled “My Graphic Heart”, the exhibit features images of love, desire and beauty all made with simple techniques and basic materials – fresh, direct and sincere.

The artwork includes crayon and ink drawings, monoprints, editions of relief prints and silk-screened graphics.  Although mostly black and white, Grafsgaard’s graphic art has a wide emotional range.   The work is sometimes humorous and playful, as in his erotic drawings and prints – and sometimes profound, as in a poster accusing world leaders with words from Dylan’s “Masters of War”.  Other work is simply beautiful.  Monoprints of the Minnesota north woods and a pointillist woodcut of a Spanish woman are striking examples.

Sometimes Grafsgaard has created variations of a print -- using different inks, or adding and subtracting marks. He displays the variations together as a series, demonstrating the discovery and chance inherent in printmaking.  But there are no hi-tech tricks here.  Every mark and mottle is a pure record of the artist’s hand and heart.

Also showing at Artrujillo Multicultural Gallery is new work from the Mexican miniaturist master Salvador Espejo, also known as Frijolito (Little Bean).  This artist paints “The World on a Bean”, creating landscapes and scenes from Minnesota and Mexico on dried beans, seeds, leaves and woodchips. He handles the brush with verve and skill, never using a magnifying lens except to show the finished work to admirers.

Frijolito claims he will have 200 new paintings ready for the show.  His prolific, though tiny, productions have gained him a wide audience.  In recent years he has exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, in Europe, and in his native Mexico.  The delicate and detailed artwork and his enthusiasm for art and life give him popularity wherever he shows.

The opening reception and party for these exhibits will be Friday March 21st at Artrujillo Multicultural Gallery, 315 East Lake Street, beginning at 6pm and continuing until the early hours of the morning.  There will be food, refreshments, DJ WAMM and dancing.  The event is open to the public.

These exhibits will continue through April 21st.  For further information on exhibits and events at Artrujillo Multicultural Studios and Gallery, please call 612-821-9076.

A NEW DAY in the LIFE of ARTRUJILLO

On January 25th, one of the best-known “underground” art groups in the Twin Cities is opening their space and inviting the public literally underground – to the new ArTrujillo Studio Gallery in the basement of 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis.  Just one building east of their former address, the new ArTrujillo is twice as big, with amenities and new art fit for a celebration!

ArTrujillo Studio Gallery is an artist collective named for the group’s visionary leader Alejandro Trujillo.  Three and a half years ago he saw the need for a space where artists could create freely, without many rules or restrictions.  “We are open to everybody who wants to create.  We have professionals who sell paintings all over the world, and we have others who are just beginning to make art.  By working together we keep our costs down and we learn from each other, plus we make bigger and better art, and show it to more people,” Trujillo explains.

Proving his point, ArTrujillo members have been busy non-stop -- creating murals, art events, exhibits and installations all around Minnesota and the region.  Members have shown at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, at CreArte Latino Art Center, in dozens of area galleries and businesses, as well as at ArTrujillo Gallery itself.  The collective has grown to more than a dozen artists with international connections, including a strong Latino presence. Guest artists from New York, Chicago, Latin America and Europe have also been represented.  ArTrujillo’s energy is one of the keys to the ongoing cultural revitalization of East Lake Street.  “We’ve been growing and growing, and finally, with the support of our landlord and patron for the arts Basim Sabri, we were able to find more space,” says Trujillo.

Now, after months of preparation and hard work, ArTrujillo artists are ready to officially open their new Studio Gallery with a 24-hour open house and fiesta. This “New Day in the Life of ArTrujillo” begins at noon on Saturday January 25th and continues until noon Sunday – with a full schedule of art, performances, music, dancing, and refreshments.

Jim Grafsgaard, a painter and ArTrujillo’s artistic director, describes the New Day:  “During the afternoon we will start with a family-friendly atmosphere, soft music, interactive wall painting, soft drinks and snacks.  Then, around 8pm, the music goes up, the party gets going and it keeps on going!  We’ll have the DJ WAMM, Blue Sky Victory band, Attempted Bender, Dan & Jake, Americo Juan and the Dramatics, mariachi singers, punk bands, jazz musicians, salsa and world music…something for everyone, and anyone who wants to join in.  And of course walls and walls and walls of new paintings and art work.”

    From La Prensa de Minnesota

Alejandro Trujillo, Artist of the Year

    Honoring our Strengths

    By Lorena Duarte

As Minnesota’s Latino population grows, so to does its strengths, its needs and its assets. Every year, La Prensa de Minnesota celebrates the accomplishments of five individuals and organizations that have made positive contributions to both the Latino community and the community at large.

This year’s recipients are Martha Cardenas (Leader of the Year), Abner Arauza (Educator of the Year), CLUES (Community Organization of the Year), El Burrito (Business of the Year) and Alejandro Trujillo (Artist of the Year).

“I paint from my memories”, says Alejandro Trujillo, the creator of murals and paintings that adorn the Metro area and the owner of the art gallery, ArTrujillo.
The Mexican native came to Minnesota twelve years ago seeking opportunities, but never imagined that the trip would lead him to becoming an artist and a sponsor of the arts in the area.
As a student and teacher in Mexico, Trujillo always loved art, but never picked up a paintbrush. It was not until his wife, who is a Minnesota native, saw him playing with a child’s watercolor set that Trujillo’s calling was discovered. His wife gave him an oil painting set and encouraged him to try it out.
From there, Trujillo says he could not get enough. He happily admits to starting out by watching Bob Ross of “happy little trees” fame. Quickly, he moved on to classes at a local community college. When he had taken every course they offered, Trujillo set out to make his mark.
In 1996 he painted his first mural at Me Gusta restaurant in St. Paul, inspired by great Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera. Since then, he has gone on to paint many more and is currently finishing his 25th. These murals depict Trujillo’s childhood, the pueblos and towns of his imagination and recollection.
Still, Trujillo was not satisfied with just painting murals. After being rejected by many local galleries and cafes, in 1999 he started ArTrujillo, a gallery and space where young, emerging artists can paint, sing, dance, write poetry and exhibit their work. Although the gallery has mainly worked with Latino artists, Trujillo is proud of the fact that they have exhibited works by artists of widely varying backgrounds.
Trujillo is happy to open his doors to anyone willing to create and is also happy to involve the community in their work. The artists of ArTrujillo offer art workshops for kids from every background, from gang members to students of the Blake School.
Several of the artists of ArTrujillo have now shown works at the Minneapolis Art Institute and Trujillo himself has exhibited at the Science Museum. Although these are proud moments, Trujillo admits it is not easy to maintain the gallery on its tight budget. Still, he says that it is all worth it when he sees someone realizing their creative potential.
He says, “some of our artists work 10 or 12 hour days and then come to paint. That’s where I see the real beauty of ArTrujillo”.

In Memory of Angelillo de la Cruz

This work depicts, in an abstract manner, the portrait of my uncle Angelillo de la Cruz who dedicated his life to flamenco dancing and poetry. He introduced me to the arts by his constant association with poets, writers and other artists who came to share their virtues. I will always treasure those bohemian nights spent reciting poetry and classical literature. Angelillo was my teacher, friend and father figure I so desperately craved. He’ll forever be at my side inspiring me and sharing the triumphs he helped me create.

    ¡QUE VIVA
    ANGELILLO DE LA CRUZ!

A DAY WITH THE DEAD ON LAKE STREET

Party Day with the Dead 02

    Grupo Soap del Corazon

    By Jim Grafsgaard

There is about to be another confrontation of life and death on Lake Street in Minneapolis.  On the weekend of October 28th, a series of 9 temporary murals will be installed on Lake between Chicago and Elliot Avenues on the south side of the landmark Sears Tower.   The murals by local Latino artists recognize the Day of the Dead on November 2nd, and will remain on public display throughout the month.

In Mexican tradition, it is believed every year during Day of the Dead the deceased return to visit us, and we must await their arrival by providing the food and other objects they liked most in life, usually offered as part of richly decorated memorial altars called ofrendas.   For artists, however, Day of the Dead has always provided an opportunity to confront the most profound themes of life and death, of human frailty and vanity, of love, hate, fear and forgiveness.

The artists of the Lake Street murals include Luis Fitch, Alexa Horochowski, Maria Cristina O’Brien, Douglas Padilla, and Xavier Tavera, who organized 2 years ago as Grupo Soap del Corazon, and have since exhibited together in several venues, including last year’s energetic “Frontera Lake Street” exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.  Also included are several artists affiliated with the ArTrujillo Studio-Gallery, including founder Alejandro Trujillo, Patricia Mendoza, Anselmo Cornejo,  and Gustavo Lira.  Other sponsors of the project include the Minneapolis Community Development Agency and the City of Minneapolis, UNO advertising and design agency, and La Prensa de Minnesota.

In these new murals, the artists use the Day of the Dead theme to continue their celebration of Lake Street as a “border” symbolizing all that is good and bad in the confrontation of Latino cultures and mainstream Minnesota.  The artworks, each 8 feet wide and 12 feet high, include designs inspired by Mexican art, such as the ancient sculptural reliefs of the Mayans, “papel picado” paper cut-outs, and even the covers of modern-day sensational true-crime tabloids.

Over the next few weeks, thousands of people will pass these murals.  What will they see?  Sensational art, for certain – colorful and questioning.  If the artists’ work succeeds many will be inspired to remember our dead, our endangered, and the richness of our living cultures and the mystery of our mortality.

The artists are planning a Day of the Dead observance at the mural site on the evening of November 2nd, followed by a celebration at the ArTrujillo Studio-Gallery, 301 E. Lake St. Suite 01, from 8pm until 3am with food, drink and DJ WAMM.  For more information call 612-821-9076 or e-mail us at artjones@bitstream.net . The public is invited.

Mexican artist Silvia Patricia Mendoza is creating her ofrenda to honor her grandmother, Micaela, who died two years ago. The ofrenda takes the form of a trajineras a small barge symbolizing a peaceful, enjoyable journey to the world of the living. The 14' by 7' trajinera barge replica  includes a table set with her grandmother's favorite food and drink, a photo of Micaela symbolizing her presence at the table, and two figures next to the photo representing her sons who had preceded her in death. The trajinera also includes figures of mariachi musicians with skull faces, flowers typical of ofrendas, and festive music in keeping with the tradition of death as a type of fiesta.

ARTRUJILLO GALLERY OPENS MENDOZA EXHIBIT NOV. 2ND

EVENT TITLE:  “How many faces do women have?”

WHAT:  Art exhibit by Patricia Mendoza

WHERE:  ArTrujillo Studio Gallery, 301 East Lake Street, suite 01, Minneapolis MN

    WHEN:  Opens November 2nd, 2002 9pm – midnight, runs thru November 30.

    CONTACT:  Jim Grafsgaard, artistic director

    PHONE:  612-821-9076 or artrujillo@artrujillo.com

“How many faces do women have?” In her new exhibit of this title at ArTrujillo Studio Gallery, artist Patricia Mendoza demonstrates that, like all women, she herself has dozens.

Patricia Mendoza has a growing reputation in the Minnesota art community.  Her sculptures, paintings and installations have been commissioned by major museums, art galleries and businesses.  Mendoza’s art is rich with the colors and flavors of her native Mexico, and often has a playful appeal.  Previously she has exhibited large skeleton caricatures of paper Mache, comics of her artist friends, and a life-size wooden cut-out mariachi band, for example.  But always there are profound underlying themes.

For this show, Mendoza has collaborated with a number of local photographers to create a fascinating series of self-portraits.  Visitors to ArTrujillo will see her peering out from a grocery stand, parts of her body for sale. She appears as an eerie biotron with a body like a metal worm, and an angel in white lingerie.

Some of the self-portraits are cute, depicted with playful costumes. But each one is also a strong satirical or emotional statement. In one, Mendoza is a solemn Frida Kahlo wearing a lampshade hat. In another, she’s an arrogant Diego Rivera with a fake mustache. There are political implications here, including criticisms of male domination.  But more deeply, we are seeing faces of Mendoza herself – adorable, subjugated, defiant, and vulnerable.

“How many faces do women have?” by Patricia Mendoza opens November 2, with a reception and party beginning at 9pm. The exhibit runs daily through November 30 at ArTrujillo Studio Gallery, 301 East Lake Street, Minneapolis, in the International Bazaar. To confirm hours call 612-821-9076.

ArTrujillo Studio Gallery is proud to present a new art exhibit Caribbean Dreams by Rigel Sauri

featuring seascapes and other vibrant creations inspired by his native Mexican Caribbean and Pacific coast.

Born into a family of artists in Yucatan Mexico, Rigel had been an apprentice to the arts as far back as his memory takes him.  His entire maternal family painted either professionally or as a hobby.  Although lacking a formal education in art beyond the basics, he knew where his career path would take him.

For several years as a youth, Rigel resided in various tourist resorts in the Mexican Caribbean and the Pacific Coast.  As an avid scuba diver and nature photographer, an immense fascination was awakened in him for tropical life in and out of water.

Since his arrival to the United States in 1989, lured by true love, he has been painting nonstop for numerous private collectors, hotel chains, casinos and restaurants as well as professional buildings and landmarks across the Midwest and Mexico.  His specialty lies in mural painting but he has also exhibited other artwork at several galleries in the Minneapolis area.

At present Rigel spends half of his time in Minnesota and heads to the Yucatan Peninsula for winter in search of his subjects and brings them back to the states in the form of paintings.

Join us at the opening reception on Saturday March 23, 6:00 – 10:00 PM followed by a late-night bash at ArTrujillo Studio Gallery featuring DJ WAMM, local Mexican fare, various poets and performers.  The event is free and open to the public.  Hope to see you there!
