My sign in the Aztec calendar is a monkey, the sign of the artisan. I believe I was born to paint in order to share my culture and rich traditions with others. In a contemporary way, I try to interpret through my personal experience ancestral forms that are part of my heritage. One influence you will see in my paintings is a living, fertile evolution connecting with the pre-Colombian conception of the universe. After leaving my homeland of Oaxaca, Mexico as a child, I returned only to find a new found vision of art, of the color schemes of the land, and the ancestral voice of my heritage. My work addresses universal themes, and evokes the basic elements of life, such as earth, air and water and their different representations. I have worked in Minnesota creating numerous murals and consigned pieces in public places. I have also brought the pre-Columbian music of my people to those here in Minnesota, and have shared my art and culture in the schools and at community celebrations for the past six years.
