These paintings describes the essential nature of life on earth; they are highly colorful, full of improvisation and movement with a strong celebratory feeling. My theme is the complexity of teeming life that exists below the threshold of our everyday consciousness. Microbes, organic tissues, tiny segmented worms, insects and crustaceans, corals, crystals, spores, pods and pollens float, mass, swim, consume, reproduce, colonize, cooperate and battle in proportion to humans of trillions to one. Indeed, our every function as individual beings begins and ends on this iotic scale. The very concept of individuality is challenged by this fact. Where does one’s self begin and end when all living and inanimate matter of the biosphere is under constant transformation and metastasis like an ever-spinning karmic wheel? We have no individual boundaries. We have only changes of state, from skin to sky, sea to season, seeing then being subsumed. And so – I paint with the freedom of a non-being, finding forms that despite my best inventions already exist somewhere in the currents and crannies of time. This is not abstraction. It is realism of the highest order, depicting life on earth.
