Hiram Titus First Solo Show

ArTrujillo Gallery proudly invites you to Hiram Titus First Solo Show

Opening Reception 6-9pm / Saturday, December 1st. 2007

  Artist Statement

As the child of an artist father and a musician mother, I lived in an ideal world of Art and Music. At the tender age of two I was playing by ear on the piano and drawing on anything and everything, including the walls and the furniture, and mother's collection of Victor Hugo.
As I began school, the drawing gradually gave way to more and more music studies, but the appreciation for art steadily increased.
A number of years after my father’s passing in ‘91, I came across the materials he had left behind. Canvases, paints, and an enormous number of brushes. It was glorious Fall weather and I set up a little studio for myself outside in the garden.
Day after day, I painted, fueled by a desire to immerse myself in color and form. I was often surprised at where the process would take me.
Looking back on the experience, I believe that this was a way of connecting to my father’s spirit in a way that was never possible while he was alive.
I dedicate this exhibition to his memory.

ArTrujillo Gallery proudly presents a selection of work by contemporary painters from The Fine Arts Gallery of Nasiriyah.  The principal city of southern Iraq and capital of the province of Dhi Qar., Nasiriyah is located on the banks of the Euphrates River, near the ruins of the ancient city of Ur.  It is a cultural center famous for its art, including the community of painters whose work is presented here - for the first time in the USA.

These masterful paintings reveal a land of contrasts previously unknown to most of us in America.  Images of lush green Mesopotamian marshes encounter arid visions of the dry desert sands.  Colorful celebrations of traditional fellahin village life hang near stark twisted figures invoking the hardships of dictatorship and war.  Western-influenced abstractions are balanced with beautiful calligraphic passages from the Qur’an.  This artwork demonstrates a deeply felt pride in the past, a powerful dignity in the present, and a confident look ahead.

In this exhibit, a dozen different artists from Nasiriyah are represented. Their artwork was brought to Minneapolis by one of their own – Haider Al-Amery, also a painter, who has been a Twin Cities resident since fleeing the wrath of Sadaam Hussein in the aftermath of the Gulf War.  “These are very talented painters, highly respected in Iraq”, says Al-Amery. “Now, with the economy devastated, they sometimes barely have money for materials.  This exhibit is to share the beauty of their art. But it is also a chance for us to show support for the artists by buying their work at very reasonable prices.”

The public opening for “From the Euphrates to the Mississippi” will be held Friday, February 24th. 2006 from 5pm until 11pm.  Food, refreshments, music and dancers will add to the festivities which are open to all.  This very special exhibit will run from February 24th. until March 24th. 2006

ArTrujillo Gallery is located at 349 13th Avenue North East in Minneapolis, one block north of University Av. and Broadway St. NE.  Gallery hours are Tuesday thru Saturday from 5pm -10pm or by appointment. Vladimir Dikarev & Natasha Dikareva at

 ArTrujillo Gallery

On Saturday March 19th ArTrujillo Gallery proudly presents its newest exhibit, “Inside Eternity” featuring paintings, drawings, installation and sculpture by the well-known Twin Cities-based Ukrainian artists Vladimir Dikarev and Natasha Dikareva.

This father and daughter artistic team, Vladimir the painter and Natasha the sculptor, have a refreshingly lyrical approach to their art.  Each displays a virtuosity of beautiful line, color and rhythm in describing the human figure.  Even more enticing, however, is their shared vision of connecting ourselves to our deeper origins.  Their images are archetypal, evoking a timelessness and grace intended to remind us of our eternal qualities – the inherent need to explore the nature of our being, for example -- beyond the noise, rush and violence of modern life.

Both artists received advanced fine arts training in Ukraine and Russia, and have exhibited internationally in Europe as well as throughout the USA.  They have established themselves in Minnesota since the mid-1990’s.

Interestingly, the new location of ArTrujillo Gallery at 349 13th Ave NE places it directly within the sphere of an historic Minneapolis Ukrainian immigrant community.  With this prestigious exhibit, ArTrujillo Gallery continues its tradition of bringing to the public a broader view of the Twin Cities’ contemporary cultural connections.

The public is invited to attend the opening of “Inside Eternity” on Saturday, March 19th from 5pm to 11 PM at ArTrujillo Gallery, to meet the artists and share an evening of refreshments, music, and fine art.  The exhibit remains on display through April 17, 2005.  Gallery hours are Noon – 10:00 PM Tues-Sat, Sun 10:00AM – 5:00 PM.  For more information, artrujillo@hotmail.com, www.dikarevart.com , or call 612-821-9076.

UNO CELEBRATES HISPANIC MARKETING WITH A

“STEREOTYPE.”

Exhibit. It will be open every day, 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., from October 4 – 13.

at the Mira Gallery in the Instituto de Cultura y Educación (4137 Bloomington Ave. S.; Minneapolis, MN 55407).

Reception on Sunday, October 10, from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Luis Fitch, founder of UNO Branding for the new majority, Minnesota’s first and only Hispanic branding agency, will celebrate the firm’s five year anniversary with an exhibit of its corporate and community pro bono communications work. The exhibit is cleverly entitled “Stereotype.”

Fortune 500 clients and Hispanic organizations hire UNO to help them effectively serve the Hispanic market. Fitch was raised in Mexico and studied at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, so is able to provide first-hand insight to the special nuances required to successfully target Hispanic audiences. The U.S. Hispanic population now numbers approximately 39 million and is clearly the fastest growing U.S. market in both population and buying power. This cultural trend is prompting many corporations and organizations to begin exploring ways to reach the Hispanic market – domestically and internationally.

Fitch will showcase several UNO corporate and cultural Hispanic marketing projects to illustrate effective Latino communications – a colorful, vivid and expressive exhibit. It will be open every day, 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., from October 4 – 13, at the Mira Gallery in the Instituto de Cultura y Educación (4137 Bloomington Ave. S.; Minneapolis, MN 55407). Mr. Fitch will host a special reception on Sunday, October 10, from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m., to allow patrons to meet with the
UNO design team and discuss its approach to Hispanic communication assignments.

UNO’s “Stereotype” exhibit will coincide with the opening of Cheech Marin’s touring Chicano art exhibit in Minneapolis. Target commissioned UNO to create all branding communications for the Chicano exhibit two years ago (at the tour’s inception). That work will be featured in the Stereotype exhibit.

 AGENCY BACKGROUND

UNO “Branding for the new majority” is an award-winning Hispanic agency based in Minneapolis. It is the only branding communication firm that specializes in helping Fortune 500 companies reach the Hispanic market. The firm provides a wide range of communication design services to a number of large corporate, governmental and nonprofit clients. It is certified as being minority owned and operated and its staff is bilingual and bicultural.

illustrators and indigenous ceramists will enter the Twin Cities Gallery
scene with  paintings and drawings that seem to leap off the page with
dynamism and energy.  Whimsical at times, though decidedly moody and
introverted at others, this showcase of Costa Rican illustration promises to
entertain viewers with its continuously eclectic stylistic swing.  At the
same time, a distinctly Latin American flavor unifies the work.  Pottery and
ceramic pieces will be displayed as well, offering a three-dimensional
component to the exhibition.  In these works, highly skilled indigenous
artisans replicate cultural antiquities with a contemporary flair.  This
rare opportunity to view many of Costa Rica's most famous artists at the
Rogue Buddha Gallery is not to be missed!

ArTrujillo's new own home on North East Minneapolis.

To quote Dickens, “It was the best of times and it was the worst of times…”this could easily be a double entendre for the tale of ArTrujillo’s recent changes and metamorphosis.

In Egyptian times, there was once a parable very common and simple in its meaning. A phoenix rising triumphantly out of the ashes…this ideal imagery provides the muse behind ArTrujillo’s CEO and creative director Alejandro Trujillo drive. His struggle along with the collective of artists within the Casa Grande which houses all disciplines of artists and mediums defines what it is to be unified in a goal and dream. After months of decisive planning and successful transactions, we are happy to announce a re-birth.  ArTrujillo Gallery is committed to moving forward with this new space and environment to enrich the current artistic friendly atmosphere here in Northeast which is complementary to our philosophies. Alejandro and all current and past members are part of this creative placenta born of the realization of dreams and actions meeting the right consequences. Sometimes, it is as simple as timing and destino. Maybe it is about karma. Whatever is it we are united and are here to stay. The good guys always finish first.

This united front the artists within this little pueblito of amazing and unique individuals are not in it for the glory they have the staying power and the passion that inflames all of us to create and make a statement. These iconic images remind us in these troubled times to be strong, to persevere, gather our loved ones close and to maintain the close ties to our community.

This theme is at the forefront of ArTrujillo’s recent acquisition of a commercial space in Northeast to bring about change, educate the community through different forms of arty-culture and to provide a space for local artist regardless of training, schooling or background to contribute their voice, message and medium. Please come and share in our new found success and become a part of our little familia.

Mi casa es su casa.

Bienvenidos!!!

MAIN$TREAM:

AN ATYPICAL LOOK AT POP CULTURE ART

Saturday,
November 15, 2003

Seismic waves emitted by popular culture art forums like graffiti
walls, comic books, gig posters, and the web rock ArTrujillo Gallery in
November. Delivering a sentiment of nonconformity, over 20 local artists
twist, bend, and puncture holes in the art world with an intriguing slant of
the artistic road less-traveled. Thrashing the ridicule and judgment often
projected by a typically mainstream art culture, this collection fearlessly
exhibits a brilliant display of illustration, paint, print, sculpture and
multimedia with its middle finger held high. Unapologetically disturbing,
deliberately hilarious, and ultimately thought-provoking, MAIN$TREAM is a
wicked array of some of the most stunning visual artistry found right here
in the Twin Cities.

MAIN$TREAM: AN ATYPICAL LOOK AT POP CULTURE ART opens on Saturday,
November 15, 2003 and runs until Sunday, December 15, 2003

Las Divas! The women of ArTrujillo Gallery present their newest creations

Women of talent, style, vision and determination – these are the Divas.  They are youthful at any age.  They are daring and demanding.  They are a sisterhood and a social club.  And they are about to grace us all with their art in an exhibit opening May 31st at ArTrujillo Multicultural Art Studios and Gallery in south Minneapolis.

The Divas include Melina Borton, a flamenco dancer formerly of Chicago who is now turning her talents for rhythm and performance to paint.  Tara LaPorte is a Florida transplant who gives image to her hopes and fears with shards of tile and bead mosaics.  Karlee Mariel, just in from Puerto Rico, is spinning her classical art training into expressionist self-portrayals that boldly hit the bulls-eye.  Sarah Stone’s classicism is twisted by her passion for punk rock graphic art and comes out free-form, verbal, angry and true.  Brenda VonAhsen is a fiercely intelligent master of the human form and landscape, which in her work become a spiritual veil for us to peer through.  A dozen other guest Divas fill out the exhibit with artworks that are sweet, street, savory and sensational.

This exhibit opens Saturday May 31st with an evening artist’s reception from 6-10pm, followed by a late night celebration of music, dance, refreshments and fun – free and open to the public.

ArTrujillo is a unique “house of culture” located at 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis.  The Gallery is open to the public daily from 3pm – 8pm, and by appointment. For further information, call (612) 821-9076 or see www.artrujillo.com.

LOCAL ROCK MUSIC GETS A WORLD BEAT BOOST with HIJOS DEL MAIZ.

Mexico City, Dakar and Sao Paulo will meet Minnesota head-on when the original funk rock of Hijos del Maíz, plays Saturday February 15th at the new ArTrujillo Gallery, 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis.  With members from Mexico, Senegal and Brazil plus years of experienced talent, this band promises to blow the snow and heat up the scene.

Hijos del Maíz translates to “Children of the Corn” – a reference to the Aztec’s most sacred plant, and mother of us all.  Like maíz, these diverse musicians believe, music is food for the soul.  They aim to give our souls a feast.

David Rodriguez, the band’s guitarist and leader, has fast fingers and solos like a warrior-priest. He learned his craft copying Mexico’s 80’s and 90’s rock’n’roll – groups like El Tri and the Jaguares, who both played the Twin Cities last year.  But he jumps into a different mode with Hijos del May, and now spices his licks with a funky world beat.

The unique rhythm section adds curry and flurry with Elias from Mexico on drums, Mamadu from Senegal on bass guitar and Eliezer from Brazil on congas.  Together they have over 50 years of performing experience and endless variety in their mix.  And finally, Cristina from Mexico contributes “sabor” with her sweet and sensual vocals.

The band has played numerous clubs and alternative venues over the past year, but this is their debut at the new ArTrujillo Gallery.  For fans and new listeners, Hijos del Maíz will open your ears.

The public is invited to this all age’s event. For more information, please call 612-821-9076 or on the internet see www.ArTrujillo.com.

A NEW DAY in the LIFE of ARTRUJILLO

On January 25th, one of the best-known “underground” art groups in the Twin Cities is opening their space and inviting the public literally underground – to the new ArTrujillo Studio Gallery in the basement of 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis.  Just one building east of their former address, the new ArTrujillo is twice as big, with amenities and new art fit for a celebration!

ArTrujillo Studio Gallery is an artist collective named for the group’s visionary leader Alejandro Trujillo.  Three and a half years ago he saw the need for a space where artists could create freely, without many rules or restrictions.  “We are open to everybody who wants to create.  We have professionals who sell paintings all over the world, and we have others who are just beginning to make art.  By working together we keep our costs down and we learn from each other, plus we make bigger and better art, and show it to more people,” Trujillo explains.

Proving his point, ArTrujillo members have been busy non-stop -- creating murals, art events, exhibits and installations all around Minnesota and the region.  Members have shown at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, at CreArte Latino Art Center, in dozens of area galleries and businesses, as well as at ArTrujillo Gallery itself.  The collective has grown to more than a dozen artists with international connections, including a strong Latino presence. Guest artists from New York, Chicago, Latin America and Europe have also been represented.  ArTrujillo’s energy is one of the keys to the ongoing cultural revitalization of East Lake Street.  “We’ve been growing and growing, and finally, with the support of our landlord and patron for the arts Basim Sabri, we were able to find more space,” says Trujillo.

Now, after months of preparation and hard work, ArTrujillo artists are ready to officially open their new Studio Gallery with a 24-hour open house and fiesta. This “New Day in the Life of ArTrujillo” begins at noon on Saturday January 25th and continues until noon Sunday – with a full schedule of art, performances, music, dancing, and refreshments.

Jim Grafsgaard, a painter and ArTrujillo’s artistic director, describes the New Day:  “During the afternoon we will start with a family-friendly atmosphere, soft music, interactive wall painting, soft drinks and snacks.  Then, around 8pm, the music goes up, the party gets going and it keeps on going!  We’ll have the DJ WAMM, Blue Sky Victory band, Attempted Bender, Dan & Jake, Americo Juan and the Dramatics, mariachi singers, punk bands, jazz musicians, salsa and world music…something for everyone, and anyone who wants to join in.  And of course walls and walls and walls of new paintings and art work.”

A DAY WITH THE DEAD ON LAKE STREET

Party Day with the Dead 02

Grupo Soap del Corazon

By Jim Grafsgaard

There is about to be another confrontation of life and death on Lake Street in Minneapolis.  On the weekend of October 28th, a series of 9 temporary murals will be installed on Lake between Chicago and Elliot Avenues on the south side of the landmark Sears Tower.   The murals by local Latino artists recognize the Day of the Dead on November 2nd, and will remain on public display throughout the month.

In Mexican tradition, it is believed every year during Day of the Dead the deceased return to visit us, and we must await their arrival by providing the food and other objects they liked most in life, usually offered as part of richly decorated memorial altars called ofrendas.   For artists, however, Day of the Dead has always provided an opportunity to confront the most profound themes of life and death, of human frailty and vanity, of love, hate, fear and forgiveness.

The artists of the Lake Street murals include Luis Fitch, Alexa Horochowski, Maria Cristina O’Brien, Douglas Padilla, and Xavier Tavera, who organized 2 years ago as Grupo Soap del Corazon, and have since exhibited together in several venues, including last year’s energetic “Frontera Lake Street” exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.  Also included are several artists affiliated with the ArTrujillo Studio-Gallery, including founder Alejandro Trujillo, Patricia Mendoza, Anselmo Cornejo,  and Gustavo Lira.  Other sponsors of the project include the Minneapolis Community Development Agency and the City of Minneapolis, UNO advertising and design agency, and La Prensa de Minnesota.

In these new murals, the artists use the Day of the Dead theme to continue their celebration of Lake Street as a “border” symbolizing all that is good and bad in the confrontation of Latino cultures and mainstream Minnesota.  The artworks, each 8 feet wide and 12 feet high, include designs inspired by Mexican art, such as the ancient sculptural reliefs of the Mayans, “papel picado” paper cut-outs, and even the covers of modern-day sensational true-crime tabloids.

Over the next few weeks, thousands of people will pass these murals.  What will they see?  Sensational art, for certain – colorful and questioning.  If the artists’ work succeeds many will be inspired to remember our dead, our endangered, and the richness of our living cultures and the mystery of our mortality.

The artists are planning a Day of the Dead observance at the mural site on the evening of November 2nd, followed by a celebration at the ArTrujillo Studio-Gallery, 301 E. Lake St. Suite 01, from 8pm until 3am with food, drink and DJ WAMM.  For more information call 612-821-9076 or e-mail us at artjones@bitstream.net . The public is invited.

ArTrujillo Studio Gallery, 301 E Lake St, Suite 01,  Mpls  MN  55406 (612)821-9076

ArTrujillo Studio Gallery is proud to present a new art exhibit Caribbean Dreams by Rigel Sauri

featuring seascapes and other vibrant creations inspired by his native Mexican Caribbean and Pacific coast.

Born into a family of artists in Yucatan Mexico, Rigel had been an apprentice to the arts as far back as his memory takes him.  His entire maternal family painted either professionally or as a hobby.  Although lacking a formal education in art beyond the basics, he knew where his career path would take him.

For several years as a youth, Rigel resided in various tourist resorts in the Mexican Caribbean and the Pacific Coast.  As an avid scuba diver and nature photographer, an immense fascination was awakened in him for tropical life in and out of water.

Since his arrival to the United States in 1989, lured by true love, he has been painting nonstop for numerous private collectors, hotel chains, casinos and restaurants as well as professional buildings and landmarks across the Midwest and Mexico.  His specialty lies in mural painting but he has also exhibited other artwork at several galleries in the Minneapolis area.

At present Rigel spends half of his time in Minnesota and heads to the Yucatan Peninsula for winter in search of his subjects and brings them back to the states in the form of paintings.

Join us at the opening reception on Saturday March 23, 6:00 – 10:00 PM followed by a late-night bash at ArTrujillo Studio Gallery featuring DJ WAMM, local Mexican fare, various poets and performers.  The event is free and open to the public.  Hope to see you there!
